Fork stopper ring broke

Post by ahol025 »

Hello all!
I am doing a rebuild on the forks of my 1984 GL1200I.
While removing the forks one of the stopper rings broke at the holes you insert the snap ring pliers in.
They are corroded pretty good and i have nothing to grab onto to loosen them up to get them out.
I've had it sitting in PB Blaster for a day hoping that would clean it up a bit and possibly loosen them up.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this out without damaging anything else?
Obviously I am not worried about the seal as it's getting replaced.
Thank you in advance

Jaime is spot on with the tools you need. And soaking them in solvent will help. You can protect the fork with a short piece of approximate same diameter pvc or abs plastic pipe slid onto the fork. This would allow you to do some picking and tapping on the split ring to loosen and remove it without doing harm to the fork. keep us posted.

I used pvc pile once to assist me during a seal install, but I can't remember what diameter it was. Maybe 1.5", not sure. But there is one that would allow you to still have access to part of the ring while protecting the fork tube.

Keep us posted.

I appreciate the feedback in this matter.
I have a pick set I have been using to work these out, the picks are now all broke (cheap set)
I'm going to stop and pick up an better set with stronger picks and keep going at it.
I haven't gotten to far at this point (little frustrated) I had to step back for a while.
I'll hit it again and keep you guys updated.
Again All the comments are appreciated!!

Well gentlemen,
I was not successful with getting the ring out of the fork,
I purchased a used set of forks for this and was able to rebuild those for the bike.
I appreciate the input for all of you!!
