leaking and possibly burning oil

Post by fred1diver »

hey everyone, my wing is leaking oil near the oil filter and from the smoke I think it's also burning some, going to do an oil change and see if that stops the leak, but as to the smoke/burning oil, what should I do?

If you're leaving it on the side stand, that will make it smoke more, when it's for extended periods of time.

Do you also smell coolant? If so it could be the water pump. Have one on order for my bike.

If it is leaking oil near the filter- could it be the oil filter is fractionally loose?
If so just give it another small turn, clean the are off and see if it keeps leaking - maybe a bad seal or the seal is contaminated.

Burning oil - could be oil dripping onto the exhaust - is it coming out the exhaust or from around the motor ??

Let us know if the oil change works. I always change the crush washer in the sump plug whenever I change the oil too.

If the oil change doesn't work there are a few questions that may help us help you figure it out...
Was this the first start up of the season? Was the bike on the side stand for any length of time? When was the last oil change? Was there any way that something may have banged into the oil filter housing? Is there burning oil coming from out of the exhaust pipes? Where is the burning oil smoke coming from?

Good luck and please keep us posted.
