Post by paneled »

Took my 86 aspy semi for a ride tonight, have a heel toe shifter
setup, shifted into second rather harsh, now stuck in second,
shifter won't move, any ideas?

First (guess) The clutch is failing. Not disengaging. Might be the master cylinder return hole is plugged. Test by opening the bleeder valve to release any pressure.

Will the shifter even move or is it jammed in up position at toe end (down at heel end)?

Remove H&T shifter, undo at slot and see if just oem lever will work.

If all fails, FUBAR comes to mind.

Oem lever won't move. Heel toe removed. Lever seems to be in center position

I'd take the engine front cover off and examine the shifter ratcheting mechanism next then. Keep in mind you'll need a new gasket kit to reinstall the front cover.

no, I haven`t. the engine on my sei has a piston pin knock that has been getting worse
so I have decided to get another engine, wound up purchasing an 86 aspy with 45000 miles
that has a title issue and is in need of a paint job, bought this bike for 250 and it runs, took this
bike completely apart over the weekend. was the first one I have ever taken apart that far.
my plan is to swap the engines, mine has a new water pump, new clutch and new timing belts,
so all those parts will get installed into the replacement engine before it goes into the bike,
the bags and faring will all get painted to match the sei and replaced over the next winter, also
gives me a pair of forks to rebuild with the progressive springs and new steering bearings so lots
of pieces to get ready and some i will keep and some I will sell, the carbs are in great shape, as i
said the bike ran great.

That is a good plan, lots to do but worth the effort.
