starter solenoid burnt up

Hello everyone, This past week was my first ride of the season. I had to replace the starter solenoid and connector cause the wire's burnt up. I just got in from a little ride and felt the wire's going to the solenoid and they were getting hot not to the point of melting like the other's but hot. Would anyone have any idea why the wires are getting hot just idling, it doesn't sound like the starter is still engaged. I don't want to have an electrical melt down. Thanks in advance for any input
