1986 aspen sputtering

Post by steppin stone »

Hello everyone wondering if I just wasted money buying parts or not. I have been have issues with the bike sputtering so had to run the bike with choke on a little so it would stay running. Well I took it for a nice ride the other day when I arrived home it sat for about an hour. I went to move it and wouldn't start just cranked. so the next morning took all the plastics off tracing all the wiring cleaning connections and finally started. I noticed that 1 of the coils weren't firing so I purchased a set of coil's with wire's and boot's. I figured might as well replace timing belt also (not sure when they were replaced or even if they have been from PO) plus it's peace of mind. While searching the web someone posted it might be the pulse generator so I purchased the sensor's also figuring i'm replacing the timing belt and i'm in there any way.

Other possible causes include fuel filter, fuel pump, gas cap vent … or something I haven't thought of yet. Hard to say if waste so far? If your PG are good, then you have spares now, and you have new T-belts. Sounds like you needed coil?

Thanks for the info crystalpistol, I was thinking I have to wait for the part's to come in hopefully they'll be in by thursday. If that doesn't solve the problem then I'll try the fuel pump and filter and if that doesn't work I have no clue where to go from there keeping fingers crossed,.

My 86 Aspencade was running something like you describe and I found that I had no fuel in the right front carburetor. I removed the right pair and cleaned them out and reinstalled them. After that it ran well for about two weeks and then started the same poor running again. I went through the process again with the same results. The front carb gets it's fuel through the rear carb so I thought maybe the tube between the two had not been cleaned, but it was clear. Then I decided it had to be the float valve sticking closed and, with the price of Honda's parts, I searched ebay to find replacements. I ordered two of them and when they arrived I removed the right pair and replaced both float valves and no more problems. The one trouble one was sticking closed even though it looked fine.

Well I am waiting for part's the pulse generator sensor to be exact to be delivered . I already have the timing belt's and new coil's and wire's delivered . So got out of work early today and put coil's and wire's in and its purring like a kitten. So if I get out early tomorrow I'll take it for a ride and see if they made a difference . I had a few beer's while working on it so no ride tonight!!! Thank's for the help everyone . I guess the sensor's I didn't need so when I put the timing belt's in i'll just replace them and keep the old one's for spare part's .
