Average Gas Mileage?

Post by dougindixie »

I have a 1984 GL1200 Standard, I average around 200 miles per tank. Is that about what everyone is getting? I thought I was doing ok and a guy told me that he could get 300 out of his to which I asked what he gets if he gets out on the road above 35?

I'm at 130 miles with 1-2 bars showing on my fuel gauge. I won't make 200.

I can get up to 250 miles on my 85 LTD.
The bike shows an average of 46 mpg at the moment.

Did a run on two lane roads, posted speed limits 50-55 mph, 200 miles, 4.5 gallons, 44.4 mpg. Red Fuel light turned on during the last three miles to the gas station. 1985 GL1200A.

My '85 almost routinely returned 45 MPG or better, 50 MPG several times, and I have seen 51 on occasion. I usually rode on US highways or state roadways, 55-60 MPH.

I only rode before filling up one time that I saw the warning light come on as a test, I had another gallon in a saddlebag then. I put just over 4 gallons in. As I recall, seems I figured it had over 1.5 gallons left based on capacity. Does the 1200 not have a 5.8 US gallon tank? If so, 300 miles is within possibilities if one can squeeze 51.8 MPG the whole way.

I have done that on my 1500s, but when I discovered "Fuelio" for my smartphone, I quit that.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... o&hl=en_US

That app is super neat, I have all of my vehicles listed in it.

Spreadsheets have a tremendous advantage over a simple logging app though,
you can have a wide choice on how you Describe the trip for that tank of fuel.
Fuelio gives you about 256 characters and you are done.

My spreadsheet also allows me to put in expense for parts and repairs and calculates that into my per mileage expense.

Fuelio also incorporates those features, I just don't use it.

Freeway speeds 70-74mph got 38-42 mpg using regular 10% ethanol.

86 Aspencade, 105,000 mi. Bike is new to me & doesn't appear to be "expertly maintained". Last tank, many short trips 37.5 mpg. Longer ride today 43.5 mpg. If I push the choke all the way up (off choke) the motor won't stay running. So maybe sometimes I accidently have it on partial choke. My 1200 Sportster gets an honest 50 mpg on a state highway but the frame mount vibration is exhausting.

I remember those days, when I had an '84 and then an '86SEi
I could drive to work and back for two weeks w/o having to top off the gas tank.

IIRC, the '86SEi would average around 45 mpg?? been a long time, that was back in 1992-1994.
