Bike just died like fuel pump quit 1985 Limited.

Post by mryan60 » Thu Aug 29, 2019 9:15 pm

Hey people, I'm back again looking for insight on another problem. I was out riding today. Bike was running fine. I went to turn at a corner and half way through the turn, my bike lurched to a stop so quickly that I almost laid it over. I went to restart it and nothing. After pushing it out of the intersection, I turned the key off and back on and noticed that the fuel system light did not come on for the self check and I did make sure I had not bumped the kill switch. After trailering it home, I switched out the fuel pump and nothing. I did notice that sometimes when I roll it one the fuel system light will flash. Sometimes when I release the starter button, the light stays on and other times it doesn't. Once again, any help will be greatly appreciated.

I found part of the problem. The throttle sensor wire harness shorted out from rubbing. I fixed that and it started up but now the fuel syst6light stays on and on the computer I have lights 2 and 3 flashing and 4 on steady. Open circuit/shortened wire. Suggestions please.

First - you need to get a copy of the Service manual supplement. Without it you are flying blind so to speak. The electrical troubleshooting manual is a must as well.

The ECU has 5 indicator lights and are read from back to front. From front to back the indicator lights are: 3-2-1-0 W. The W indicator light is on indicating a fault in the system. Then you read the other indicator lights.

The Fuel System light is the CFI check engine light for the '85 LTD, has nothing to do with the fuel system. It will be on anytime there is a fault/error code on the ECU.

I would surmise that the error code is for the TPS and it is out of spec.

Good luck.

Thanks. I was able to download the supplement. It led me to the throttle sensor. I tested it with my multi-meter. It was way out of adjustment. I returned it to spec's and it seems to be running fine now.
