Stator Failure
I purchased this Gl1200 Interstate last fall. Had not been ridden in 20 years. Have spent the last year going from one end to the other. Finally got it running and then the stator failed. It was unexpected. When I removed the plug and soldered the leads it was very bad. I need to buy a new one. Just wanted some recomendations on where and what to buy. Don't want to have to do it over again in a year.

Re: Stator Failure
Mine failed in 1997, I went to Honda, got one with life warranty …. never another issue in 50K more miles. I just sold the bike in June, 2019. I don't believe Honda has them any longer. Google "Poor Boy Mod" for alternatives.

Re: Stator Failure
I thought about the poorboy conversation. But I would really like to keep thing original. It also concerns me that there is a lot of talk about the crankshaft seal failing and none available. But thank u for the reply.

after having a 1200 wing with a poorboy kit installed I would never go back to having one with a stator. if it is properly installed it looks stock but has way more power than the stator plus its easier to change if or when it goes out. I gave my niece my 1200 wing but a friend of ours has a 1200 wing with a poorboy kit on it that I want to buy

Re: Stator Failure
Are you sure the stator is bad? I just had a charging issue myself. I did a couple of test and prematurely came to the conclusion that the statot was bad. Cut the stator wires from the bike and measured the AC voltage while it was running. Stator was good. I ended up replacing the three wires that ran to the reg/rec. 14.8v now.

Re: Stator Failure
Stator is bad. Cut the wires and measured AC volt between the yellow leads. When the stator is cold it will produce 44 volts between A & B but only 14 volts between A&C and B&C. After the bike warms up, its between 12 and 13 volts on all leads. The interesting thing is, none of the leads are shorted to ground. While I was going through the bike I checked the Stator connector. It was very bad so I removed the plug and soldered the leads together. While I had them cut I checked continuity between the leads and the regulator and they were good. I am leaning on doing the PB Conversion. Have been researching parts and availability. I think I can do the conversion for about the same money as a good stator and rear gasket. Have the shop and equipment to fabricate all the brackets. It looks pretty straight forward. Thanks for all the imput.

Re: Stator Failure
Awesome. I would probably do the poor boy conversion too if I was in your shoes. Only thing I wasn't crazy about was the fix for the radiator fan. I wish there was a computer type fan (or two) that could replace the large fan. Hoping to never have to find out.

Re: Stator Failure
I'm going to try to put a 10 inch automotive push fan on the outside of the radiator. Don't think it will look too bad an hopefully will provide the clearance needed. If not I will make the spacers. It just seems easier than removing the engine. There are so many posts about aftermarket stators failing in a year or two and if it fails while ur away on a trip. If the alternator fails it can be easily changed. It just seems like the best solution.

Re: Stator Failure
You are right about having a stator fail while on a long trip. It is not a good road side fix. I put the Poor Boy conversion on my Aspencade a couple of years ago when the second stator failed. No charging problems since and plenty of power for heated grips and clothing.

Re: Stator Failure
Did the external alternator mod summer 2016. Had the alternator fail on a trip south to Big Sur Park in the fall of 2017. Failed in Redding CA. Local Honda dealer took the bike in, sourced an alternator from the local NAPA store and had me back on the road in less than 24 hours, can't do this with a stator - less expensive as well. Used a 55 amp alternator, the 4 wire type.

Have been looking on Ebay. Some people have used the Chevy mini Denso. The one I looked at is a 50 amp 1 wire that would not require any cutting or modifications. Reasonable price about $65. I ordered the pully today from the UK. 3 3/8 W 12mm bore. $32 including shipping. I guess I'm committed now.

Ordered the alternator today. 50 amp mini denso type one wire. Also decided to change the timing belts while I have it all apart. Checked Honda OEM, $74 bucks apiece. Is there another source for these belts or is this the going rate? Seem very expensive.

So Gates T070 is the right belt. Found on Amazon for less than $8.00. That's a lot better than $74. I have used Gates timing belts in the past on cars with good luck. I ordered them tonight. Thanks very much

The interesting part of this is the Honda OEM belts are made by Gates, just re-branded. What a markup!
