85 GL1200 ticking noise

Post by Coder88 » Fri Sep 20, 2019 6:11 pm

When I start the bike there is no noise when it gets warm there is a clicking or tapping noise coming from the right valve cover area it seems to happen every 4 or 5 seconds. It also happens a bit faster when I’m accelerating in 2nd gear any ideas. The sound doesn’t seem to have any kind of pattern at time it will click every few seconds and another time the clicks will be spaced at random intervals. I just had the oil changed at my local Honda dealer.

Ok so it’s 100% the fuel pump I put my hand on it and I can feel the pump move when it clicks. Where do I go from here anyone know where to get a new one. I’ve looked online but I’m not sure which one will fit. Also how difficult are they to replace. Thanks in advance :)

Ticking fuel pump is not an indication that the pump is failing. The electrical contacts inside are doing what they are supposed to do. In most cases when the sound gets loud enough to hear it usually means it is starving for fuel. Possible clogged fuel filter, fuel line or some kind of restriction to fuel flow.

Thanks for the reply my friend. Wouldn’t a fuel supply issue come with some kind of performance lose?

Not necessarily. Pump may just not be getting the normal amount of fuel causing the pump ticking to be audible. It is always ticking you just can't hear it. No tick no work. This is just one possibility for the audible ticking.

Ok so it’s for sure the pump I can feel it when I touch the pump so I’ll go ahead and check the filter and hoses. Is that a sign of the pump beginning to fail?

Don't know how loud it is now or even if it's louder than used to be, but I've heard it before on occasion, but not always.

First, try a new fuel filter. The one on it might have some miles, age, restriction.

Then, if it still ticks loudly, time to look at pump closer. Here is a link I bookmarked in a list in some files I put on a CD for a fellow. Take a look, it'll help one to understand the pump. Doesn't look too hard. Really ain't a lot to go bad wrong.

You are welcome!

The nice part is if you have to look closer at the pump, you can just take it off and take it into shop (or kitchen) to fix.
