neutral light

i have a 85 interstate gl1200 the neutral light does not work most of the time , od light works fine.Bike will start in gear or out gear pulling the clutch lever..can someone please give me the test procedure to check the n switch that is the front cover.i have a clymer book and it is not to clear..green /red has conntinuity od light works.sometimes might turn the key on and it will light up , put in gear go back to N and light does not light up...when you do the test does the key have to be on and etc.trying to determine what is going on here..any help and tips would be greatful..i have read for hours on hear about the 1500 and 1100 searched and searched i just need step by step to get started on my 1985 gl1200 interstate ..i have spent more time reading than it would just to go ahead and fix it..very very fustrating.
