Front Axle Nut Silly Question

Post by patbrandon1 »

I'm trying to remove the front wheel from my 87 Goldwing. The axle nut doesn't want to budge.

Is it a right handed or left handed thread?

Don't want to break anything or round off the nut. Please help. I have followed the how to do the letter, but there is no mention of which way to turn it. Nothing so far on the internet either.

Thanks.

It's a regular right hand thread.

Thanks CrystalPistol. I finally got it off, and invented some new off color words in the process.

It was buggered up pretty good by the previous owner. I'm taking it to a machine shop to have the head of the bolt machined to 20mm. I believe it was a 21mm, and those sockets are hard to find, plus it was all rounded off. I don't think taking 1mm off will hurt it at all.

What do you think? :?:

Methinks 20mm socket be even harder to find than 21....

You can probably go down to Mother Honda and get a new nut, should be in stock, I bet that same nut was used on a whole lot more other bikes besides the '87 Wing....

I have a 21 mm 6 point socket, but 21 mm /25.4 (mms in an inch) = 0.82677" X 16 = 13.23/16ths inch. Try a loose fitting 13/16" spark plug socket. Wouldn't take much with a file to flats I bet … but try it first.

I was at Mother Honda today to pick up my wheel. They said that there are no more axle nuts for 87 GL1200s. Told me to try to look online for used ones.

I had mine machined down to a 20 mm and it worked very well. I already owned a 20 mm socket for some reason.

Thanks for all the help you give me. Makes it funner.
