Riding along when loud explosion on left side

I was riding alone about 35 miles an hour on my 87 gl1200 hundred LTD and loud explosion on the left side of the bike are my knees and a puff of white smoke happens all my gauges go out on my lights go out bikes running fine check after I get home there is a capacitor in line actually there are two in line coming from the rectifier regulator do the red and white wire all my fuses are good that I can find but still no gauges please help

I don't recall there being capacitors/condensers on the regulator of the 1200. I had a look at the schematic for the 1200 Ltd, and I do not see any capacitors in the power section, so I'm left wondering if this was an aftermarket or previous owner addition, perhaps in an attempt to solve audio noise issues? Capacitors will explode like you describe if they are subject to conditions that exceed their limitations. Can you post a picture, perhaps?
