Muffler Repair

I have developed a hole in the muffler on my 1200 right below where the tire spins all the crap on it. Not too obnoxious at this point, in fact I really didn’t notice the loudness of it until it was pointed out by a much more experienced owner. Short of replacing the muffler with one from eBay is there any way to patch the hole that would be somewhat permanent? It is oval at this point about the size of an oval dime if that makes any sense. Thanks.

If it is just one spot, I would weld a patch on it. If you can't do that, a local muffler shop could.

Cut up a piece of a tin can for a patch, scuff up the are of the muffler and use JB Weld to tack it in place. Then smooth another thin coat over the patch. The repair on my 94A has held just fine years.

I used JB Steel Weld to "fix" the exhaust manifold on a 1981 Ford six engine in a pickup
it will never come off again

Exhaust? I know the original long cure is strongest, is rated 600 degrees, works miracles. Good Stuff!

I have a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, has the all plastic composite intake that is known to fail in the coolant crossover. I have a 2003 intake that has the aluminum coolant crossover, but in time the plastic part of intake where it seals fails as the plastic walls of the formed seal ring groove fails, so I took it apart, pulled out the seals, and cleaned it all, filled groove with JB Weld and coated the surfaces & put the aluminum back on, reinserted the bolts and plan is to put it on the car soon, as preventative. Also enlarged rear plastic heater hose bib (3/4" OD) to allow insertion of 5/8" OD copper tube, JB Welded that in place too … expecting it to be bulletproof.

Had a chunk of aluminum crack & cause leak where AC hoses attached to compressor 3" from exhaust port of a '92 Thunderbird, cleaned & built up area with same slow set JB Weld, let cure, reattached hose manifold … was 10-12 years ago, no leaks.


I forgot, used the JB Weld on my '77 F-150 on right Exhaust manifold to head pipe joint a few years ago, I recall now. Was going Pft-Pft steady. Coated with generous dose JB Weld, wrapped with a piece of stainless screen, then a wire wrap and let cure, it's still good too.
