Post by Papajohn88 »

I am about to I switch to a 1500 final drive. Does anyone know if the 1500 swing arm will fit the 1200 frame.

No. You don't need to anyway, just drill out the 4 holes a little bit bigger for 1500 FD 4 studs to go through. Use 1200 driveshaft too. If you use a 1500 brake caliper bracket (modified as below), axle, all spacers, drive adapter & wheel, then you get a larger 1500 brake rotor for more rear brake power, a better wheel bearing set up (1500 wheel has well supported drive side double row wheel bearing to handle weight) and you keep the 1200 caliper which is same as a 1500's anyway.

The grinding on the webs of the strut is necessary to allow the strut to rotate into its final position without springing the rear swingarm assembly. Needs to be milled or ground to approximately 0.510 inches to fit into the 1200 at the boss, less so at the ribs. If you don't properly grind these webs, the strut will twist from its proper position also twisting the rear brake caliper causing rapid wear of the brake pads and destruction of the rotor. Also …. Need to grind approximately 3/16" off the tapered end of that left side lower shock bolt so it doesn't rub the larger rotor.

Use a 150/80-16 rear tire if you like. I was gonna use Avon rear tire with 908 lb. load rating. If DS … here is a picture of a a GL1500 whl with General Altimax 195-55-R16 CT on GL1200

Thank you, I did not realize it required that much grinding. I have the 1500 caliper bracket at a local machine shop now being machined to match the original 1200 bracket. I guess it will need further work after I get it back. The whole point of this for me is to be able to mount a 195/55rf16 87v tire, gain some load capacity so my wife can ride with me. I have a Voyager trike conversion already installed on it.
