Any advise needed

Post by fcanary »

I’ll try to keep it as short as possible. Took my 1200 out of winter hibernation in early April. Did the usual maintenance to it before putting it away, except for the second year in a row I failed to pull the battery. When I went to wake it up, she didn’t want to start. Seemingly a weak battery. Threw a charger on it and finally got it going. Rode a bunch, but a few times when trying to start it she seemed to “chug” a couple times before she finally got going. I attributed it to a four year old battery that may have drained too many times and was finally on the outs. The last straw was when I took it in for the annual inspection it just clicked when trying to start after the inspection. The mechanic threw a jump box on it and I went home and replaced the battery. Started right up and I thought my problems were solved. The following morning the “Precious Cargo” and I decided to head out for a ride and when starting she again chugged a couple times and finally did start. We did ride and when I got home I put a full charge on the battery. Thinking I may have other issues, I started researching here and other sights re: stator failures and starting relays. I start vacation in a week or so and I figured I could wait until then. Nope! While out with the Precious Cargo yesterday, after it started ok and 45 or so miles, she died right in the middle of an intersection. Hit the starter, nothing. I have all my lights on the dash and headlight and the like, but it just clicks. Thank gawd for AAA. Now I have to figure a way to get her started so I can check all the needed components. I haven’t checked the sitting voltage on the battery to see if it is drained, because, quite honestly I was too pissed off to do anything and didn’t want to make any foolish mistakes but I don’t think it is, maybe wishful thinking on my part. So I am looking for any advise to get this thing started so I can check what I need to check

Definitely sounds like not charging.

Get a full charge on the battery, start it up, then put a voltmeter on the battery. With engine at 3000 RPM you should measure 13.5 - 14.5 volts at the battery.

If not, next step is to test the stator.

So here’s what I’ve done so far. I fully charged the battery. It started right up. Took readings across the posts and was reading 12.4 volts dc with no improvement boosting it up to 3000 rpm and higher. A steady 12.4 I noticed the connections from the stator were corroded so I cut out the plug and temporarily wired nutted the wires together for testing purposes until I can get my solder equipment at work. I measured the voltage at the wires and was reading 4.6 or so across the wires a to b, a to c, and so forth. All were about the same. I disconnected the wires and tested directly the wires off the stator and when revved I was getting about 10. I believe I should be getting 60 to 70. So unless there are more tests I can do I guess I’m looking at a bad stator. Any ideas?

Stator should be tested with it disconnected from the bike. Did you have your meter set to AC volts and not DC?

If it WAS on AC volts and you're only getting about 10VAC at 3000 RPM, that indicates a failed stator
