87 GL1200 interstate speedo

Howdy all. I’m new to the goldwing bikes. I recently purchased a 87 interstate and the speedometer was not working. I have replaced the gear box and the keeper. The cable turns nice with a drill. It worked for about 40 miles then stopped again. Am I doing something wrong with the install. I’ve had this apart about 10 times now (tried fixing the old gear box). But with all new it just stopped on my way to work this morning. Any help would be awesome.

If the inner cable spins smoothly at the top while spinning the front wheel, then the problem is where the cable connects to the guage or the speedo itself is bad. Just make sure neither end of the inner cable has had damage (rounded or a piece broke off, making it too short), and that the cable is threaded on straight and all the way in.

Just got home and tore it back apart. The brand new $90 gear box straight from Honda had a bad spot in the metal piece that connects to the cable and snapped. Made a hybrid of my old and new to get my by for a benefit ride tomorrow then get this one warrantied on Monday.

Welp my hybrid fix worked. Put about 200 miles on it today. Gonna do a couple hundred more tomorrow I think.
