85 Limited Edition

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1985 Gl1200 Limited Edition in excellent shape and low miles for the year. Any advice positive or negative from you guys would be appreciated. You have always come through before, so let me hear from you!

You do know that is the oddball fuel injected model. If after an inspection you can determine it has no running/driveability/FI issues nor charging system deficiencies or other problems then go for it. If it is not perfect in those regards be prepared for what you are getting into.

Thanks, ct1500. Yes, I am aware of the issues you bring up. The injection model is one I would like to collect, but without a lot of restoration. This one looks showroom new but I have not been able to survey it in person. It is only about an hour away from my home, so is very tempting.

I have one. Bought it for a variety of reasons in fall of 2015, and is my retirement project. After I bought it I did find it had been rode hard and put out wet so to speak, and possibly abused with an altercation. I was looking for an older model Goldwing that was fuel injected and here on Vancouver Island the market is very small. I use mine for daily riding, and the Mrs and I tour on it as well. I have been working on mine for the past 4 1/2 years - mostly maintenance but some mods that I wanted to do such as a side stand safety switch, always come up with something to do. Right now I'm rebuilding the engine, and going to give it a fresh coat of paint. I have found the '85 Limited Edition to be very reliable, rivals it's carb cousins. Every used bike has its day. The main issues with these FI models IMHO is the throttle position sensor, stator and possibly the rectifier/regulator. Everything else can be ordered, or a suitable alternative has been found that won't change the look or operation of the bike.

To maintain these FI models you do need the manuals; OEM service and electrical troubleshooting manuals and the supplement. Without these very hard to troubleshoot any issue.

Good luck.

Thanks rednaxs60. I have viewed some of your posts and glad to see you are riding on a regular basis. I appreciate the input from someone who has 'been thru the mill' on this model. I hope this one turns out to be in better condition than yours were when you purchased them. We will see. I was parking my 1800 at an ice cream shop on the coast about at year ago and a gentleman from Alabama walked by and we started a conversation. Although he no longer rode, he had one of these he bought new. It had 185k on it and he had ridden in every state and the provinces, including shipping it to Hawaii to ride there. He was very positive about his experience with it. Thanks again.

Thanks. These are great bikes. I bought one in Ontario in fall 2017 as a parts bike. It had been sitting in this fellows back yard for four years so putting it on the road was not an option; however, it was at my brother's place and when I went home for Christmas that year we decided to see if it would start. Cleaned out the fuel system, hooked up a battery. It turned over, and then it caught once. Both of us were wide eyed. Next try the engine started and settled into a good idle. Pic of bike outside and running:

No more parts bike. Came back to Victoria with a work list. Put together a parts box and June of 2018 went back home, did the maintenance required and put it on the road. Approximately 4200 Kms and a nice ride the bike was in Victoria BC. Pic of both in Victoria, mine on the left:

Sold the one from Ontario as it did not fit in with what I wanted to do. Had a good time with my brother getting the bike ready for the trip across Canada - priceless. Trip across was great. Another tick off the bucket list.

I love my LTD.

I bought it 2 years ago with around 73000 km on the odometer. The mileage was very bad with 30 mpg. I did the basic maintenance, adjusted the throttle valves and the throttle sensor with help from Rednaxs60. Now I'm over 90500 km and the consumption went down a lot. The best was 48 mpg from a week ago. All my rides are 2 up.
I wish you good luck with yours.

Safe rides,
Jens
