Carbs gummed up after seafoam

Post by JoeDallastx »

Hello ya'll
Greetings again from the great state of texas
I have a situation i'd like to report/consult about something just happened to my 87 gl1200, carburated
I bought this project couple months back to bring ik back to life, odo shows over 70k miles....what i did was basically remplaced all the hydraulics on it, oil change and so on, but my question is related to the fuel system...... you see, replaced old gas from tank, as well as i took carb out, teared them apart, cleaned them really good (they were nasty, hard dirt-like scum everywhere). Did not replaced any jets, but i did cleaned real good, i did replaced only the needles....put bike together and ran like a champ, for some time....after maybe half a tank, i decided to re-fill it, and for some reason decided to add SEAFOAM,...so it ran for maybe like 20 miles, and started failing after that, to the point that it was really hard to started.....and just could not go at all when gas was given....so frustrating

I checked fuel pump, per manual, it was a little under specs, so i replaced with a new one...same thing...
Soooo, i decided to tear apart carbs one more time, and what i found was NASTY!!...the carbs bowls where so gummed up!!!!as well as main jet..... the number 1 carb jet (i believe) was the worst.... look probably worst than the firs time i did couple weeks ago.... the substance i found was a mixture of earth-like powder and some gelly looking black substance, could pickup with the screwdriver...i was appalled, 2 weeks ago, i had those carbs soooo clean!!!...

Ok, so im done putting it back bike together, will start it in a couple hours, this time i wont use seafoam.... with only new gas....

Any thoughts?...would it be possible i added too much seafoam?... what couod be the reason carbs gummed up so quick?..i used bike fairly often for short rides after firs clean up...

I regret not taking pics of the carbs insides to show how bad it was....im a little scared will happen again...

Thanks

Seafoam is a solvent, so it can dissolve deposits from your fuel system. If your tank was absolutely coated with lacquer and goo, the Seafoam likely dissolved it and allowed it to flow to your carbs. So you cleaned the carbs, but not the fuel tank. You need to clean the fuel tank, or this will likely happen again.
