The tank is cleaned. the fuel filter and pump replaced.

It all sounds and feels perfect up to the second you should take your thumb off the starter. it just dies rather than keep firing...
As usual, this is my first post, sorry for all the rules I just broke. I am naturally dumb.
I bought a fixer upper as a way to grow knowledge... I am so close but it just wont finish cranking!

I only hear two of the four cylinders firing. Try "Priming" the cylinders (unscrew the sparkplugs and put an eyedropper of gasoline in each sparkplug hole) and see if that makes any difference, you might get it to catch and be able to rev it up enough to run somewhat to determine which cylinders aren't firing.
Probably carbs.

You didn’t say if you had the choke on or not. Did you connect the new alternator correctly? 1 or 3 wire? It does make a difference. Where did you connect the power wire from the alternator to? Did you or PO replace the dogbone with a 30 amp fuse/holder? Did you check the main ground connection for corrosion? Have you checked the carb bowls to see if you’re getting fuel?
