85’ Limited: Engine squeal at idle

Post by BB Goldy »

Hello everyone
A new guy here
After owning an 85’ Interstate We bought a 45K mile Limited which has this annoying Squeal at idle that seems to be mostly on the right side.
The squeal seems to decipate as the engine is being revved.
I saw a 14 second youtube video of a bike with that same squeal.
Any chance someone would have a clue as to what I may be encountering?
Air leak?
Valve noise?
Timing belts squealing?
Thanks
BB Goldy

I had a similar squealing after I redid the IAC air hoses under the air chamber. One came loose, makes a very annoying sound. Im would check these hoses but you have to take the air chamber out. Here are some pics of what you find:

After I renewed the black hoses one came off and there was a good squeal, these reed valves pass a lot of air. This pic shows where the plastic "T" came out of the connecting hose, see arrow:

Good luck

Oh Boy :o
Thanks so much 👍
A retired Honda mechanic herd that sound and guesstimated the same.
Is there a video around of how to take that out
Do I need to pull the engine out first?

Pardon my manners, welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new to you '85 Limited Edition fuel injected bike. It is different from the carb models, and as such, needs to be treated differently. Enjoy your new ride.

My '85 Limited Edition has been a work in progress for the past 5 1/2 years. Generally do a two week work/maintenance period then ride, repeat as necessary. Two major projects that I wanted to do, rebuild the engine and complete paint job were to be done, but with the C-19 issue, moved these forward and did these last year. Have the bike back on the road.

When you do remove the air chamber, recommend new crush sealing washers on the fuel filter, and the fuel pump connections. Crush/sealing washers for the fuel filter can be bought off Amazon in a kit. The kit will have different sizes and are good for the brake caliper, clutch and front brake MC connections. The crush/sealing washer for the fuel pump is a special item - P/N 16705-PD1-003 is a special crush/sealing washer - only place that I could find that has these is CMSNL.com - get a couple when you order.

Good luck.

Just thinking out loud...
If we take out the air box wouldn’t we be able to ‘drop’ on that hose junction from up top?
Thus avoiding having to yank out that whole apparatus?
Thanks for all your support 🙏

Can't get to the IAC hoses unless the air chamber comes out.

I was able to reach the previous owner
He claims he was able to reach in with his hand and pinch in one of the hoses to make that squeal temporarily stop(when the engine was cold/just started) I’m thinking maybe the hose in the picture may be the culprit hose(looks like it’s slipping of it’s band)
