86 1200 voltage regulator

well just installed new voltage regulator this afternoon
checked all wires did not see any shorts
started bike and within five to ten minutes of running only putting out about 11.6 volts at 3200 rpm
and wires on new regulator burnt off the insulation
any ideas as to why would be a great help
or is it a case of now i have to do the poor boy conversion?
