Turn signals won't function
I just purchased a 1985 Goldwing Interstate and had to trailer it home as the turn signals don't work. I have read a few of the notes here and checked what I could. Swapped out flashers as hazard lights work, and found a slightly pinched wire under bracket for clutch res. I soldered wire back as a few strands were broken, but still no luck. Everything else on the left controller works, just no turn signals. Looking for ideas while I have everything apart. Thanks!!

Re: Turn signals won't function
The turn signal and hazard flashers are provided with a different power source.Verify the turn signal flasher has 12 volt going to it with the key on,stop switch off,and turn signal on.If the 12 volt is there,it leaves the flasher, goes to the switch, and directly to the 2 lamps(through some plugs obviously). Here's a schematic.

Re: Turn signals won't function
Thank you so much for the schematic. Gave me a few things to check. I have 9volts coming into the switch with power on and in the center position, off, but soon as I flip it one way or the other, power is lost. Center it again and back to the 9 volts.

Re: Turn signals won't function
Cool, sounds like a loss of electrons.Check the fuse holder (both sides)and fuse with the voltmeter, somewhere there's a bad connection. Also the input and output of the flasher. It should be 12 in and flashing 12 out

Re: Turn signals won't function
Had a really bad sick day in there, glad that over with!! Charged battery, full charge, cleaned all connectors at fuse box and replaced all fuses just incase. Good contacts being made, nice scratches on fuses. Full voltage both sides of fuses and 12 volts going into flasher. Flasher and connection to main body wire harness all were cleaned as well as switch. Still only getting 11 volts on grey wire to switch. Possible bad grey wire?? Maybe just a pinch somewhere?? I guess just looking for something I missed as I have continuity between flasher grey and switch grey.

Re: Turn signals won't function
I have 2 questions.First, when you turn on the turn signal do the lights go on but not flash?
2nd were the lamps replaced with LED type?
If they are LED and are on but don't flash, replace the flasher with a electronic flasher.
Even 11 volts should be able to light up 2 lamps unless the ground is broken.
Turn on the turn signal(key on) test the wire at the light to see if the volts are getting from the switch to it.There should be volts on one wire only, there has to be a ground path.

Re: Turn signals won't function
I tried to jump the switch right from the battery and get both sides to light up when I power them up. But no flash of course!!

Re: Turn signals won't function
Did you jump to the input of the switch or each output wire.Go with the same testing.hook the wire from the battery, turn the turn signal on.Apply battery power to the switch input .It should light up the light.if it does, move to the flasher. It should light there also.eliminating the ? wire.
If it lights at the flasher move to the input of it.That should flash them.
You get the idea.Apply battery volts at each point in question then keep moving back to the fuse area.
Here's the test points.
You can test for volts but only with the key on,turn signal on and kill switch off.

Re: Turn signals won't function
with key in on position, jumped the power going into the flasher (the white/green) to the power to the turn switch (grey) and the lights stay on the direction switch is turned to. I switched out the flashers once again, but same result, no lights at all. I have full voltage coming into the flasher, but can't figure why even after switching flashers they don't work. Is the turn signal flasher set at different values for voltage then the hazard flasher??

Re: Turn signals won't function
I just pulled my turn signal flasher off my 84 gl1200 interstate. Here's what I find.
The white/green is 12 volt power, gray goes to the switch.
Shorting them together will turn on the light as you found.
What I also found is that the green wire MUST be ground. If it's not the flasher will not flash.
Try again and hook a ground wire to the green wire.
You can test if the flasher is OK by swapping in place of the emergency flasher(I just tried that)
They look different but function the same,at least for testing.
It sounds like the wiring to the lights are ok.
Note:: on the flasher it's marked 'B' 12 volt......'L' to switch......'E' ground

Re: Turn signals won't function
Tried inserting a wire into the ground side of flasher (blue/black) and grounded straight to battery and flash away!!! Thank you very much for all the help, its greatly appreciated. Can finally go for a ride on my first wing!!!

Re: Turn signals won't function
Don't cut that wire off the harness, just tie to it and ground it close.Somewhere the ground is bad or broken, this will provide a new ground for it.

Re: Turn signals won't function
Thanks, already done, just ran a new wire from negative side of fusebox to flasher as its closest thing around to ground to, and only stripped wire and soldered new wire to, didn't cut!! Thank you so much once again!!

Re: Turn signals won't function
This sure reminds me of a problem I had with my 1990 Honda Accord. I had the 4 ways working just fine but the turn signals would only come on but would not flash. I found that I could jumper the wires to the 4 ways circuit and it would work. In my attempt to get a good spot to wire the jumper I removed the 4 way switch from the dashboard and lo and behold I found that the connector going the the switch was unplugged but would make enough of a connection to allow the 4 ways to work. Once connected properly the whole system worked as it should. That jumper could give you trouble later on. Just a thought!

I'm having same issue on my 1985 GL1200 Aspencade, turn signal lights, light but don't flash, having troubles locating flahser unit, any Idea's where it's located.

Re: Turn signals won't function
The flasher on the GL1200 is under the false tank, near the front, on the right side, mounted in a rubber ring that is attached to the bracket that holds the ignition coils.Free58 wrote:I'm having same issue on my 1985 GL1200 Aspencade, turn signal lights, light but don't flash, having troubles locating flahser unit, any Idea's where it's located.

Re: Turn signals won't function
Ok guys for the ones who have been looking for a solution on a goldwing limited....it's the purple wire coming out of the flasher for the blinkers ground it to frame and get back to legal turns lol
