1985 gl1200 LTD has no power to fuel pump

Post by washandy98664 »

Hello all, and thanks in advance for all the help.
The other day the LTD started to quit running.
Happened a few times, then just would not start.
Checked the fuses, connections, and went hot wire from battery to fuel pump, and it works.
Not sure what is wrong.
Please help.

I'm just going by the wiring diagram, so I'm not sure of the locations.

If that is it, you can check it for power in and out, and check it's connected to the pump.
Looks like it get an ignition signal, so it's not just a plain relay.

Can't use the 1984 wiring diagram for the '85 Limited Edition. Have a page from the electrical troubleshooting manual, but having issue uploading it. Will work on it.

Here is a wiring diagram for the LTD/SEi computerized fuel system. Looks like a failed #4 or #5 relay could cause it but also there is are a couple of dogbone fuses there by the starter relay that you should check.

Yeah, I thought about the relays. I changed them around and no joy.
Dogbone fuses are fine.
I did run a hot wire from the battery to the fuel pump and it runs. So I know that the pump is ok.
Where can i get a couple of those relays??? maybe that is still the problem

What does the unit that is located near the front of the false tank do??? That is the one encased in rubber with 4 wires coming out of?

Here is some general information on troubleshooting the CFI system on these bikes. Have you checked all the fuses in the relay box? Specifically fuse #9.

Well......after checking all the fuses and relays, I went to check the ECU.......well no lights at all coming on the little window when turning on the ignition.
I guess that means I need an ECU...
Please tell me I am wrong...

Do you have the GL1200L service manual supplement? Very hard to troubleshoot one without that.

No I do not have the supplement manual.
I used the wiring diagram that was sent to me.
Power is all there except to the fuel pump, and rear lights. ( The lights are in the same circuit as the fuel pump)

Still no power to 4 fuses....
Checked power at battery connections , seems to run 12 volts out just not getting to all the systems.
I rewired the old dog bones to blade fuses about 5 years ago. Checked all the wires, still can't figure it out....
