So I was riding down the road at about 65 in Overdrive, then all the sudden there was a very loud pop that sounded like a back fire I lost all power, no hazards or turn signals, and the tach went crazy. I pulled over and had no power at all pushed the bike to a shaded area and striped down the farings to check the wiring harness, the ignition fuse was blown and the smell of burnt wires came from the ignition unit so I opened it up and saw melted solder. After taking the box completely apart I think the loud pop was a few capacitors exploding. I have no idea what could have caused this and can't seem to find much info on the ICU and I'm just posting to see what anyone knows regarding an aftermarket replacement or what some of the components inside the box have to do with what part of the circut, because when looking at the diagram the wires go everywhere.

Re: Ignition control unit major problems
Those are resistors that blew, not capacitors. Capacitors are the upright metal tubes in the top right corner of your first picture.
If they were in fact capacitors, chances are you might be able to get away with just replacing them. But for a resistor to blow like that means a serious electrical fault occurred, sending FAR more power through those resistors than they were designed for. Chances are pretty fair that other components on the ECU are also damaged.
You can get a used replacement unit, but before hooking it up, I would triple check all the wires running to it to ensure that there isn't a short somewhere that is sending the wrong voltage on the wrong wire, or else you could end up blowing up the replacement as well.

Re: Ignition control unit major problems
I appreciate the response, the capacitors were also blown as well, alot is damaged, but thats why I sent the picture. I haven't gotten the chance to get into the wiring harness yet (works been busy), I found the same bike and a whole bunch of parts for 500 which is a pretty good deal considering the prices I seen for replacements.I noticed some corrosion in the plug to the starter solenoid which could point to the main fuse route or a possible bad ground somewhere along the line . I'm hoping the stator didn't go out cause then I might as well put another enging in it. I will post my findings when I get down to business.
