Hard shifting

New to me GL1200.

So first thing I noticed was the clutch on this GL1200 was dragging pretty bad. Rebuilt the slave and bled it several times. Seems to be working normally as best I can tell. I get some stiction when I start it in first but the bike only lurches forward a hair and it breaks free and starts up fine. Pretty normal stuff right? I can hit neutral easily stopped or in motion. Downshifts if done at appropriate speeds are always smooth as silk. Upshifts if I do them between 2500 and 3000 are always fine.

What happens though is if I pull to 5000 or 6000 rpm and upshift I can feel the dogs trying to catch and will often hear a clunk or two before the gear locks in. I know these transmissions are in the clunky side but I don't know how normal that is. I could always just shift at certain points but that's somewhat annoying too. 5th is always perfectly smooth. It's really 2nd that never catches as much. Bike only has 46k on the odometer. I keep trying different shifting techniques like shifting faster. Shifting slower and letting the rpms drop more and nothing really seems to help.

Another thing I noticed is that it won't go into 2nd from neutral while stopped. I don't know if that's normal or not. I can click up from 1st to 2nd stopped fine but it wants to grind from neutral to 2nd. I think it's because it's only really designed to go from 1st to 2nd. If I'm moving I can pop up from neutral to 2nd easily. I've probably only missed 2nd like 3 times in 300 miles. If will shift but with the dogs barking above 3k.

I really don't think it's the clutch. It's engaging about 1" into the pull. I didn't rebuild the master but I probably will this week. Where do I get the brass bushing? I can get the rebuild kit ok.

And how normal is this? My CX500 would skip dogs sometimes if I shifted at really high rpm and quickly, but never this often. I'm just worried I'm going to do damage to the dogs and wear them out prematurely. I also have searched and searched for someone with a similar problem and came up empty. The shifter is the original stock shifter. It doesn't seem bent. I dumped the crappy floor boards and am using stock pegs.

I'm running Rotella T4 and yes it's fresh oil. I know someone will ask. Short of rebuilding the clutch master and next pulling the clutch basket out next I'm running out of ideas. Nor do I want to keep chasing red herrings. If I have to shift early all the time that's fine. I will just keep on riding it like it is. I just wish I had a better idea of what is going on or if it's just their nature.

I thought about running some MMO in before I changed the oil again and seeing if that helped.
