Trunk Reflectors

Post by donens »

Recently purchased Limited which had the aftermarket amber signals installed on the trunk. Like the concept of signals top and bottom but would like to convert the uppers to the OEM red on the corners but for signals. The OEM red corners have a reflector type paint. Is there any way to remove that reflective paint without damaging the plastic lens?

Great question. Not knowing what kind of paint base it is, I would first try to soak it in water for a week and see if any begins to lift off. Water can be a great solvent, and it is the original. That's where I would start.

Keep us posted on what you do.

According to the instructions for the kit I bought, it keeps the red lenses, use acetone and a stiff brush to remove the silver paint. I wouldn't soak the lenses in acetone, just brush the silver off and rinse.

Thanks! Tried using Gun Wash and soft bristle brass dremel brush. Seems to get most of the silver paint off, at least so light passes through. Doesn't completely remove silver because the inside is all bumpy, assuming for refraction purposes. Should work though. Thanks to all.
