clutch friction plates specs

Post by stuartb306 »

Hey ppl's. I'm trying to install new clutch friction plates on the transplanted '85 1200 Limited engine on my '86 SEi. I know what the "service limits" are on the plates @3.20mm. What i need to know is, when the plates are new, what measurements do they start out at. The manual doesn't tell you what they are, only the minimum service measurements.

The other day i bought what i thought were NEW plates, and most of them are BELOW "service limit" specs. Thats what i get for trying to save some money and buying cheap knock-off parts instead of the genuine article. Now i have to send them back and wait for a refund.

Hi Claude. Thanks for your reply. The new friction plates are installed, and now the clutch is very "sensitive" to the point that i need to learn how far to release the clutch lever LOL. I keep finding myself stalling the bike from how i used to have to use the distance when releasing the lever. I am STILL having a problem with the dash lights for the gear indicators. My neutral light stays on and the only thing that shows is neutral when im actually IN neutral. Engine was changed, but still having the same problem as with the old engine. Any ideas? It shouldn't be possible for the same situation with another engine on it or can it.

Hi you have an 86 SEi, I cannot remember if it it have an LCD dash or witness light as per neutral lite? Also you stated that you had this problem before you change the engine?

here is a photo of what my dash looks like. The green light shows "neutral", and the "N" is where the gears are displayed. They SHOULD read, N,1,2,3,4,5 depending on what gear the bike is in.

Hi one question does your bike start when you have it in neutral but not pulling the clutch? reason I ask is in the circuit for the neutral there is a diode and if it was shorter it could cause this type of problem.

As long as i make sure its actually in neutral, i can start it without pulling in the clutch lever, otherwise if the gear lite is blank, (IE: no "N" showing on the gear screen), i MUST pull in the clutch lever or else it WILL be in gear when i try to start it up. I've had that happen a few times and almost dropped the bike off the side stand not realizing it WAS in gear.

Where is the diode for the gear selection located? The chance same thing happening with 2 different motors are very unlikely.

Hi The diode I am referring to is the diode that allow you to start you bike in neutral and is connected to the neutral lite. I do not think this is related to your problem. It is located under the seat on the left side of the frame.
Can you confirm that the gear selector connecter is firmly inserted? it is located on the left side between the fairing and the frame it is black 6 pins connector.

No, the green lite stays on and the gear selector goes blank, and only shows "N" when i put the bike in true neutral, otherwise it stays blank.

Try this locate gear switch connector (it’s the black 6 pins connector on the left side between the fairing and the bike frame under)
Use a multimeter to check the continuity (0 ohm), one end to ground and the other to the pin with the following wire color:
Gear position
1 Yellow wire
N Light green/Red wire
2 Blue/Yellow wire
3 White/Blue wire
4 Red / White wire
5 or OD Green / Orange wire
As you change the gear, follow with the meter lead to that pin of the wire color and it should always read 0 ohm

Hope this will help you

'Mornin Claude. Finally had the time to check why im not getting a gear reading on my dash. It WAS the shifter diode thats located in the harness in the middle of the bike wiring. I bought another one from Ebay and installed it, and now i have all of the gears showing up on my dash. From the looks of the old one, its never been changed as it was still wrapped in the original electrical tape. Guess it went to the "big electrical diodes in the sky" LOL. I suppose after 36 years it was expected to go and need to be changed. NOW i can see what gear im in.

Thanks for all your help with this.
