a friend gave me this rim for a GL-1200 and with the ding in it I was wondering if it is safe to use?

That's a pretty good one. It isn't cracked, you might be able to get a wheel repair place to make it safe again. I don't know that I would trust a tire bead to seal against it the way it is.
Also have them check it for true and round, as that was a pretty decent hit to cause that.

a used wheel is lots cheaper than the machine shop. i would use it for yard art.
