Radiator Fan Issues

Post by Tomcomox »

Good day All,

!984 GL1200A, 93 kms, lots completed to date. I was on this forum earlier dealing with some fuel issues but all good now. Bikes runs , starts, but....

Before I put all the plastic back on I'm going over the bike to make sure all is in order and then this started happening.

I run the bike , bring it up to temp, 4 four bars on LED gauge radiator fan comes on, doing some voltage checks, 13.4 - spikes to 14 V at 3000 rpm. Then when I turn the bike off, hear fan operating I have no juice left in the battery to restart immediately after shut down, put charger on battery bike starts fine.

I know there s is a gremlin in there somewhere I just don't know where to start....I did have rad off to change timing belt, did i overlook something ?

Cheers,
Tom

So that's what the bike's charging system is putting out, but if you have a bad cell in the battery, it might be looking "full" to the charging circuit, but not able to provide sufficient current when not being charged.

As was mentioned that just tests the charging system.
Test the battery at 0 RPM

Good day all,

Just letting you know, I'm finished playing with my 1984 GL1200 A...( for now ). I did just purchase a 1995 GW 1500 SE, voyager trike kit installed from an 85 year old gentleman that said it was time to let her go. Babied , clean and very low milage, 31,200 miles ( about 50,000 kms ) ... I couldn't pass it up.

Planning a Route 66 / cross country run this summer and thought I could get the GL1200 A ,up and running, but I wanted some "big" bike time before the trip.

The 1500 SE is big and quiet, running well, will go over it before the trip and of course the " trike " riding learning curve is progressing along well.

Once again thanks for all the inputs / suggestions /advice and just to give this forum fair warning I'm not gone for good.

Cheers to All,
Tom

my 84 gl1200 turns off the fan when i turn off the key switch. it also doesnt turn on the fan untill about the seventh hash mark. 4 bars is normal running in cool weather (under 80) and 5 or 6 bars when its warm weather. the fan then only kicks on when in town. i have every reason to believe this is normal operation as honda intended. i would suspect you have some wiring/temp switch/previous owner issues.
