Goldwing start up smoke

Post by markwing1100 »

Hello,
Bought GL 1200 , 1984 recently with no known history. Not sure how long it sat outside in the weather. Last tagged 10 years ago. Rebuilt Carbs, all new gas and vacuum hoses attached to carb, new gas filter, cleaned gas tank, new spark plugs, new oil and oil and air filter. I will install new timing belt soon but i wanted to at least hear it run. I started it but it has lots of white smoke. i start it like in 5 min increments because i dont want it to get too hot (right now i dont have all the gauges hooked up so not sure if it is getting too hot). it is not misfiring or backfiring. Oil is clear and water level seems to remain the same. Ive read the articles on white smoke--ref to cracked head, head gasket, etc. I do wonder if maybe water is trapped in the mufflers--and that is causing the smoke. I also wonder if maybe i dont have the carbs set right---which is most likely. i did try to adjust the sync screw on the left side--but I dont know what I'm doing. On all the carbs--i backed the idle screw 4 full turns. after reading this -hope you can give me some advise on what to try next. thanks in advance-soldier for life

if it sat on the Side Stand, what you have is normal and will go away after you ride it for a few minutes.

oil seeps into the low side cylinders, nothing to worry about unless it never stops.

only takes a small droplet to make a lot of smoke

thanks, yes it was on it side stand for long time i suspect cause when i took the carbs off---the low side was really really bad on the carb floats etc. i was just afraid to start it---i didnt want to cause any damage to the engine if the smoke was a sign--to shut it off. thanks

You really have to get it ridable and put some load on it. It's really hard to clear out an exhaust full of crud with just running it stationary. (like hours and hours) As long as the oil and coolant looks good, I wouldn't worry too much about the smoke until you can get it out on the road.

yep, what they said. my 84 1200 had sat for some time before i bought it. smoked crazy and it was parked on the center stand. it was a full quart too much on oil level too! lol. changed the oil, still smoked every time i started it, even after rebuilding the carbs. it took about 30 minutes ride on highway to clear it out, and it still to this day will smoke after parked on side stand. it will be ok, main thing is to get belts changed and make sure the brakes are working correctly. these calipers tend to stick and need to be rebuilt a lot of times. also check the dot date on the tires, they are probably rotten.

yes thanks--for all help. i think the carbs are running really rich also. when i rebuilt the carbs --i turned the pilot screw (new screw) 4 full turns out on all carbs. Maybe i should have gone 3 full turns out before making any changes?

My plan
I will start soon now to flush the radiator, install new thermostat, install new timing belts, new tires (they are over 10 years old) and wheel bearing, work through the brakes and ride the hell out of it. Anything else or suggestions to repair or replace?

BTW--i did clean the gas tank really well, fixed the gas tank float, installed a temp gas filter right below the on/off valve (i installed a new one under the Carbs also. After a couple of tanks of gas burned i will remove the temporary filter.

thanks again for all the above help.
