Radio issue

Post by Thebronze »

Hey guys...
Having an issue with the factory radio... some times it works... sometimes it doesn't... Seems to be a power issue... the fuse circuit has power.. but it seems that if i turn the bars it won't come on... and randomly I'll start the bike and the radio works... cleaned the contacts on the radio and bike side... no difference... anyone else have this issue?? When it works it works perfectly, every feature works fantasticly...and then it doesn't... maddening

When you turn the bars and it doesn't come on, did you check for power then? (without changing anything) Could be a broken wire making intermittent connection?

Power at the fuses doesn't necessarily mean power at the radio. Check at the radio while moving the bars.

This have happened to me once or twice on my GL 1200 - but nothing more than that (knock on wood).

My 2004 Toyota Yaris/Vitz got the same problem - since I got it from my father in October there have been no sound - until one morning in late March when it suddenly decided to play! I drove to work (short drive - but in traffic) and on my way back home it went mute after just a few minutes. The next day it randomly started - and been going on and off a bit since. Until yesterday it was actually playing both radio and CDs daily for the entire drive (30-60 minutes usually); then died as I went to visit my parents and I turned it off - this morning it worked again - for about 10-15 minutes then silence...

In March my plan was to remove the radio in May (as I am moving May 1st so wouldn't make much sense to play with my soldering iron and multimeter before that), then it started to work and I thought about spending an afternoon removing all the plastic to refit all the screws again - now I am not so sure about this plan and may go back to the troubleshoot plan.
It is the original radio (a Panasonic too, I believe) as indicated by the serial number on the radio and in my dad's autorized extras manual in the car's book. While I can't play any radio or CDs due to the dead silence the speakers play the GPS lady's voice just fine when I use the unboard (and sometimes quite outdated) navigation - which was the first I checked in October when I realized that the CD-Radio wasn't working.

My guess is a bad solder joint, wire or trace - but it is all just a hunch.
