New to me Gl1200

Post by billball »

Hi to all,
I just purchased a 1985 GL1200 from a friend that said he bought the bike from a friend but he states that the bike was so hard to ride that he sold it to me knowing that I have a 1983 GL1100 and I just love the bike. The problem is the bike feels like it is made for a very short person. The seat is almost riding up the tank (which I removed the seat and reversed the brackets to gain another 2 inches) But the foot pegs are very high and the shifter is low so trying to ride the bike is very uncomfortable, the pegs are higher up than my 1983 and the shifter is very low making it hard to shift. My question is - can the stock foot pegs be moved or rotated to lower or move rearward so my big feet fit better to allow more room to shift this bike. With changing the seat made it more like my GL1100 the foot pegs make this this bike un rideable for me (I'm 6 foot with size 14 boots) I've ridden lots of Goldwings in my time but never a 1985.
Any Help
Thanks

i had the same problems when i got my 1984. you are correct, the bike is totally designed for a short rider. best answer i can give you, is remove the center devider in the seat, level the foam, this allows your butt back about 4 inches or so and allows your knees to be at a 90 like sitting on other bikes.i then added padding to raise my butt another couple inches. raised my shifter, and moved handlebars back. this allowed me to get used to the relocation and will do for now

this link is invaluable. i used the authors recommendations to "fix" my seat. it did make a big difference. i am now on number 8 adjustment to my seat foam and design. i can actually ride almost an hour without having to get off and walk around lol. good luck to ya. .
