1987 GL1200 Fuel pump/relay
I have a 1987 GL1200. Fuel pump went bad about 6 months ago and I replaced it. First issue is in 1987 Honda went to a larger fuel line size so I have reducers on the in and out lines to the fuel pump. I don’t think that’s the issue, but… Yesterday I left for a multi-day ride and got about 150 miles from home and the Wing just died. It was clear the fuel pump was not working. Thought the new one had died. As I contemplated how to get the bike off the road and home I thought I would try one more time. When I hit the starter I could feel the pump start working. Bike started and ran for another 30 miles of so and quit. I again could feel when I hit the starter that the fuel pump was not working. When it cooled for about 20-30 minutes I could feel the pump working again. Longer story short - I turned around and it would “run out of gas”every hour or so. Once it cooled off the fuel pump would start working for a while. Eventually I got home. Does this sound like a mechanical or electrical problem? I’m wondering if the fuel-pump relay is the culprit and that’s what would start working once it cooled? Or is the aftermarket pump going bad after 6-months? Or something I haven’t thought of yet? Thanks!
