gl1200 trying to balance carbs

Post by TheHunter »

I don't have vacuum readings on any carbs but #1?(bike front right) i can get that one to react, but cant get the vac to the green zone on the gauge. am using a amazon 4 gauge carb balancer. everything is tight so a pretty sure i have a good seal. when i play with the damper nobs they all bounce all over but when i get them steady, they are basically at 0.

bought a 4carb rebuild kit from amazon cause the bike had sat for who knows how long. did the kit, but one of the carbs float pin posts was cracked so order that carb used. got it mounted and everything switched over. bike runs decent (IMO).

have had the heads off, had a stuck valve, replaced it. also did new timing belts, cause why not. am 99%sure the timing is right. the marks are right on and i turned the motor over with the starter multiple times to make sure it was still on before I closed it all up. i torqued the head bolts all to spec and pattern.

the bike runs fine right now, but was trying to sync them to make sure the new carb was in sync, and found this...

bench sync first. those gauges are no good, and are based off old 50s automobile tech. the green means nothing, only that they are all the same reading is the same. mercury tubes are the bomb, if you can borrow. but, carbs need to be totally functioning correctly and valve adjustment within spec before you can sync. when cleaning carbs, bench sync, then when all is well, vacuum sync.

I used to sync with those gauges, it took a long time and I could get pretty close, but it was a LOT of work, and a lot of guessing game.

I ditched those gauges and switched to a Carbtune Pro Carburetor Sync Tool and never looked back. Simple to read, self-damping, and you don't have to worry about the engine sucking in mercury or water or anything else, because there are no liquids in it.
