85 GL1200 LTD Looking For Pointers

Post by ThePhtm »

bout a bike that was being stripped down to be sold for parts. have everything before it was sold. Clean title and all runs amazing...working on getting trunks and what not back on at the moment.
issues i have found so far...
first: air will flash EEE or just --- but not go up just down. tried putting air in but valves are too small for my air chuck. special size or am i just using wrong port? suggestions on process to fix the air ride system?
second: gear indicator works but rpm and graph mph fuel temp and all doesn't seem to work just shows zero though once in awhile rpm will flicker. thoughts?
third: button on trip computer for changing temp and air/ oil displays works but there is no display on the trip computer at all.
other than that its all that I've found wrong other than the fact they broke the ignition switch and just replaced with toggles. got a new one just got to wire it in. also there are some other wiring they've done from battery up towards the fairing that look to be going to headlights and such since they replaced the factory stereo and speakers....will probably try to keep that but swap to a better setup for Bluetooth and such since factory stuff is already gone...though I do like the volt meter they have instead of the clock.
runs without a single miss and rides perfect shifts smooth new tires and battery on it...boxes are all clean and seat looks new....i paid 100 bucks for it so not going to complain about a little work...my last two i bought were an aspencade and interstate both were sold to me as parts bikes not titles...trying to get my feet wet...have titles for them now and both repaired and sold. bought this LTD cause my dad bought one several months ago and thought it would be cool since hes getting up in the years and wants to go on road trips together. Thought have twins would be cool.

Sounds like you have a great bike and not too much wrong. Suggest getting copies of the OEM service manual, Electrical Troubleshooting manual and the Supplement - most important for these FI models. The supplement will provide you with most of the answers you are searching for.

For the air ride system - "EEE", recommend taking the connectors in the right side of the front fairing apart, clean and reconnect. The air compressor is forward of the connectors.

If there are extra wires from the battery recommend disconnecting, remove, and if you want to add lights or whatever, start with new wiring. Never know what the previous owner has done.

The trip computer may need the connectors cleaned and reconnected.

The trip computer and dash are interconnected, use the same signals from various sensors for operation.

First issue IMHO is to get the manuals especially the Supplement. Without the manuals you will ask a lot of questions and get a lot of opinions. These FI models are not the same as the carb models.
