87 lash adjuster caps???
I'm working on a clicking sound on an 87 interstate on the right head. I've disconnected the fuel pump and some of it goes away, but the predominate sound remains. In investigating I took off the head cover and removed the lash adjuster stopper plugs one at a time, looked at the lash adjuster to see if anything was obviously messed up, removed the one shim that the stopper had, reinstalled the lash adjuster, reinstalled the stopper plug, put the cover back on and started up the bike. All four of the valves had a single shim. After the test run I reinstalled the shim and moved on to the next valve. I did this for all 4 valves on the right side. That didn't help me figure out where the click comes from. I even started her up with the cover removed and tried to listen, but there was too much oil going everywhere. It did seem like the click was NOT as noticeable when the cover was removed. With all that build up, here's the real question. When I took out the lash adjusters from the exhaust, I was expecting them to NOT have the cap like the intakes have (part C in the pic). Both the Haynes and the Honda service manual state that the intakes have the little cap, but the exhaust do not. Any ideas why they would be there. I also took off the left side cover and removed an exhaust lash adjuster. It too had the little cap. So that's not why I have the clicking sound.

That clicking sound is the cam out of center... I think.
I've been in and cured it on mine. The procedure is in the book and very easy.
However, I'm not sure what they call it or what page.

I'm thinking the real question got lost in the background. This bike has lash adjuster caps on both the intake (where they should be) and the exhaust (where they are NOT shown in the diagram). I'm wondering if anyone knows why that would be. Maybe there was a Technical Service Bulletin that installed them?

One thing might be what year the books you refer to were published. The '87s had several changes that wouldn't be included in earlier books. And even then, some of the changes may not have made it into the new book. What page is that pic on?
Also, it's possible that someone has worked on the bike and simply put the wrong part in.
