Post by Geofd »

And all of a sudden my bike died and I pulled the side cover, the starter relay was melted, and all of a sudden
Smoke then a small fire, it when out pretty fast, I think if the battery cover was on it would have gone up totally, fire melted wires on the side of the battery, it just happened a couple of hours ago so it still were ot broke down, hopefully it's not to bad but I think it is it's an 86 I interstate was running perfect

Sounds like a direct short, If it were me I would get an ohm meter to ground and the other to the positive battery cable(disconnected from the battery) and see if you get a direct to ground reading, or if you have a beeper on the meter use that then go backwards checking each wire, you have a charge wire, a momentary power from the start button then it goes down to the starter I would check each wire, if you get a direct to ground off the batter just start disconnecting plugs till it stops.
I never worked on a 1200 but I am just guessing about the way it is wired, may be more to check
