final drive

Post by 86 goldwing »

have another issue replaced my final drive
after about an hour to an hour and a half of riding
decided to check to temp of final drive
it was really hot to touch
i would guess the temp to be about as equal to a fresh made cup of coffee in a paper cup with no milk added
does this sound normal or do i have a problem
gear oil is up to bottom of bolt hole for checking level
used sae 90 gear oil
also rear tire gets just as hot
but the rim feels a lot cooler
now if rear tire is out of balance i am thinking that might be the reason for tire getting hot
i have 2 ounces of dyna beads in the tire
any ideas on this would be a great help thanks

The final drive does get hot. In addition to soaking up heat from the tire as it flexes and picks up heat from the road, it generates its own heat from squeezing gear oil repeatedly between the hypoid gears. It will be hot enough that you don't want to keep your hand on it for too long. I've never actually measured the temperature of mine...but it definitely gets HOT, especially in summer.

Thanks for the good news WingAdmin
that is good to hear thats one less worry that i have to deal with
now i hope that if i throw in another ounce of dyna beads in rear tire i might get it balanced
and cool down the tire

The differentials on my semi typically run 200-250°F I would expect that like most oil bath components, you want to see it regularly above the boiling point of water to drive out any condensation.

yes! just like engine, trans, and anything else with oil. laser temp guns are cheap. if in doubt, buy one and find the temp different areas run at. if too hot, it may show a bearing on its way out.
