Timing belt pulley noise?
Hi all, I've been working on my 87 Aspencade and replaced the timing bets. Got it fired up today to synch carbs and idle drop. Getting the squealing/grinding noise heard in the video below and it seems to be coming from the front although it is louder when I am standing behind the engine. I was hoping it would quiet down but it hadn't after close to an hour of running. I can't say if it was making the noise before I replaced them, it's been sitting for a while. Do the new belts need to stretch a bit? Do I have the tensioner's too tight? Anyone have a clear idea? Or is it something else completely? Appreciate any help you all can provide.

Re: Timing belt pulley noise?
When I replaced my belts the tensioners made a similar noise. I used a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise. I ordered new ones and by the time they arrived I'd ridden it enough and the noise had vanished. My theory was the grease had enough time to redistribute in the tensioner and with more used it wasn't an issue. It's been several years since that occured and the new ones are still on the shelf.

I appreciate the response. Kind of thought if it got ridden it would take care of itself. Going to double check the tension since everything is off the bike still. I wasn't exact with the tension measurement and was going on feel.

Re: Timing belt pulley noise?
What did you use to measure the force? I was thinking a fish scale.

Something like this...
https://www.amazon.com/ABN-Belt-Tension ... 606&sr=8-7
This is a 10 lb. unit, that puts the measured force in about the middle of the scale.

Re: Timing belt pulley noise?
Figure I'd post an update. I pulled the tensioners and cleaned them up, accurately checked the belt tension and put it all back together. Noise has disappeared! Thanks for all of your help.

Found that if you rotate the engine.
Then set the other sides tensioner.
Things will quiet down nicely.
Each side has a bit of tensioner slack to eleminate, while the other side is tight.
Setting the tensioners this way works well for me.
