New to me. 86 GL1200 Goldwing Interstate.

Post by ginblueearth »

In late January, I purchased a 1986. GL1200 Interstate. With a Seized motor. For $300 Bike is in beautiful condition. I thought I could maybe get the motor Unstuck. But everything I've tried since the end of January has failed. So now I've purchased a used motor. From a Bike that had 45,000 miles on it. Here's my question. Before I put the new motor in, the 86. Should I putting in a new stater And new timing belts. And is there anything else I should do to the new motor before I put it in? I'm putting on a Volkswagen . Single carburetor kit. Also, I had a heck of a time getting the old motor out of the bike. Are there any tricks to getting the new motor in? I watched videos on Youtube. I ended up taking off the. Timing Belt Pully on the right hand. And the thermostat housing. By the way, I do have a new thermostat for the motor. It appears the thermostat was installed upside down on the seized motor. I'm wondering if that's what caused the problem. Any ideas or suggestions. Or pointers on putting the motor back in would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Glen Murra

Timing belts would be a good idea. The starter no, or absolutely not if it isn't OEM, and the VW carb is a very bad idea, too.

Thanks, Dennis. I had a friend come over today. And he had one of those little deals with a camera. And I went up and were the Stater is at. And it didn't look good at all. Could see that it been very, very hot? Appeared to Been Burnt. Lot of Blistering. On the the coils, I had A stater. here. For my 1984 interstate. And a gasket. So I took it apart and put the new Stater in. Got it all buttoned up and ready to go. After I got the old one out, I'm glad I did it, because it wasn't in good shape at all. But thanks for your advice I really appreciate it. One thing I am curious on is why you don't think the Volkswagen carburetor set up is a good way to go. I tried to help a friend of mine. What is 1984 goldwing? The had set for three years. The Carburetors needed to be cleaned, so we pulled them out. Didn't have an ultrasonic cleaner? So he ordered a carburetor kit. And cleaned everything the best we could and put the kit in. I just had a heck of a time getting it to run. After we cleaned everything and installed the new kit in the carburetors. He eventually just sold the motorcycle and gave up on it. That's why I decided to go the Volkswagen carburetor set up on this one. And instead of messing around and trying to clean the carburetors, After having such bad luck on that other one. I figured I'd just do. The VW setup. I have everything here, but I can return it if. You can tell me a good way to clean the carburetors. I can say I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner. And I've looked at him and they're pretty expensive to buy Thanks again. Glen Murra

Just that I've seen more issues with new aftermarket staters than old OEM units. It's not the staters that have a problem, it is usually a lack of maintenance and some hot wires.

I'm definitely gonna keep my fingers crossed at this stater works out. Well get rid of the plug in and wire it. Straight through. The old plug was really corroded really bad. That's probably what caused the problem. Corrosion is a killer. Definitely gonna Get a set of timing belts ordered up. And get those put in too. Thanks for the advice. Glen Murra

Some folks do ok with a VW carb, while for others it's a nightmare. You will for sure take a big power hit, as that carb was made for a 60HP low revving air cooled engine, and you want to install it on a close to 100HP higher revving liquid cooled engine. Carb icing can also be an issue. It all depends on how much work you are willing to put in, and what your expectations are.
If you don't have carb experience, your best option is to send the carbs out for a complete refurbishment. There are fewer and fewer places to do that, but I have heard good things about Bear's Cycle Restoration.

Thanks for the tip on Bears. Looks like a very interesting place, So I'm gonna get in contact with them. Probably will have them rebuild the carburetors. For the 1986 Gold Wing the pricing charge to do it is definitely reasonable in my books.
