Hi guys, I've been given a 85 GL 1200 that has no fire at any of the plugs. So far I've replaced the pulse generators, both coils and 4 new plugs and wires. I took the cdi box (or whatever it's called) and plugged it into my running 85 GL 1200 and it fired it up so I'm inclined to think it's still good. I've checked all the fuses, checked the hot wire going to the coils with a test light and both wires (one for each coil) has juice going to them, I then clipped my test light on the positive side of the battery and checked the negative side to the coils and both wires were pulsating lighting up my test light when I spun the engine over indicating to me that the pulse generators are doing their job. As far as my knowledge goes the coils should be firing the plugs, but still no spark. I've also checked the kill switch and it is functioning properly.
Does the regulator have anything to do with firing the motor, or does it just regulate the electricity going back to the battery???
Any ideas from you guys what the problem might be??? I'm at wits end with this thing, now I see why it was given to me lol.
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions that might fix it

It sounds like you have covered all the bases. I would function test the coils. Power up the coils and momentarily ground the other terminal. There should be a spark at the spark plug when you break the ground connection. Be sure to leave the other spark plug installed and connected when doing this test.

Don't take them off. Ideally you want to check them in-place.

Re: No fire
You sir have my gratitude. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, been extremely busy at work... I left the coil packs on the bike and put 3 of the 4 wires on the plugs in the bike. Took the 4th wire and put a plug on it and held it to a ground while spinning the motor over and it sparked and sent a nice little jolt up my arm lol... Little did I know the rest of the wires had to be on the plugs, learn something new every day... Thanks for your help and advice, now on to the other list of things I've got to do to it before taking it on a ride... New tires and such.

Re: No fire
Yup, wasted spark systems don't really spark to ground, but through the ground to it's mating plug and back to the coil.
Glad you got it sorted out.
