Hello I am looking at purchasing a 1986 GL 1200. The bike appears to be in good condition The individual selling it I believe is a younger guy and claims he purchased it from the original owner. He says it fires right up and runs great however he took it on a trip last year with no issue then It sat for a year or two and now he said when he starts it to let it warm up it starts to overheat. He says it doesn't seem like coolant is getting to the radiator. I asked all questions regarding head gaskets and things of that nature and he said there's no fluids mixing in that was not the issue he believed it to be the thermostat. I also know the possibilities of it being a faulty sensor or maybe a bad water pump is there any known problems with this? And what would your opinions be on purchasing bike? He said it never overheated when he was riding it and every time it got to warm as it sat to warm up he would shut it down.

These 1200 engines are bulletproof if everything is working well. Does the rad fan work? The seller indicates that this is probably the issue. Other than this, standard maintenance issues, fluid flushing, rebuild the clutch slave cylinder, make safe for the road - brakes, tires. Carbs may need to be overhauled, as a minimum check carb synchronization. Do a check of the vitals, engine compression. If the price is right, go for it.

I haven't had an opportunity to check it out yet but from what he says everything works as it should he just claim that there wasn't getting to the radiator but that could very well be the problem. Thanks I'll make sure to check that out!
