GL 1200 limited no spark

Post by TSCdirtbike »

I just got a 85 gl1200 limited non running bike. The previous owner replaced the battery and couldn't get the starter to work. I pulled the starter apart and cleaned the commutator and managed to get the starter working. The bike has no spark though.

When I turn the key on, the oil light comes on. The neutral light does not come on, although the gear indicator shows the bike in neutral. The fuel and fuel system lights do not come on either. Following the troubleshooting instructions in the manual, I checked for voltage at the cfi relay and had no voltage there. From here the manual states to check the fuse, which is good, and the ignition and kill switch, and wiring. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to check the wiring to figure out why it's not getting power?

Have you checked both 30 amp fuses at the starter solenoid? Power to the system then comes down to the ignition switch and engine stop switch (kill switch).

There is a white wire on the battery starter solenoid "B" terminal for the CFI system power that goes along the backside of the battery and has a 30 amp fuse. Must be checked. If this fuse has failed, nothing will work.

Thanks for the tip about the fuse. It looked good, but with a voltmeter I found no voltage on the other side of it, and when I pulled it off it fell apart. I replaced it with a standard fuse. After this, the computer got power and the fuel system light comes on as it should. I still do not have spark at any cylinder though. My thought is that either both coils failed at the same time or the computer failed. Does anyone have the service manual for gl1200? Or can anyone post the coil troubleshooting steps? The limited manual supplement does not give steps for troubleshooting the coils.

Testing coils is straight forward.

Primary resistance at the spade connectors 2.5 to 3.5 OHM
Secondary resistance between cylinders - unplugged - with plug boots on approximately 25 Kohm. With the plug boots removed approximately 19 Kohm

These coils do not fail that often.

The B/W wire to the coils should have approximately 10 VDC, only have to test one coil for this.

An ECU fail is not good. When you turn the key to the ON position, the dash should go through a start up cycle. If the FUEL SYSTEM dash light stays on when the key is turned to the ON position, check the ECU error code window before turning the key to the OFF position. The FUEL SYSTEM dash light has nothing to do with the fuel system, it's Honda's check CFI system light.
