Adding a ptt button

Post by RBGERSON »

I installed a volume control for the passenger on my 97 1500..what I bought was for an 1100..has a 5 pin plug which works and I can regulate the volume on the intercom and the radio to the passenger...but it came with a push to talk button too which I'd like to hook up but I don't know where to tap in to the harness or what connector to open up to

Is there someplace I can plug this, see pic below brown two pin connector, in or wire it in to give the passenger access to the CB push to talk function???

PS I did have this in another old thread but no one seemed to notice..

I'm trying to remember....I think the passenger PTT connector on my 88 is under the seat near the trunk and to the left side.....I believe there is a connector for channel up and down too there....

I'm not sure if this will help but Honda uses the same color coded wires for the bike....If there is a white PTT wire up front,it should be the same configuration for the rear....This schematic is from the 98 manual....it might give you a idea....

Thanks for the ideas..was hoping that Honda built in a PTT wiring just didn't hook it up unless new buyers paid for the upgrade..guess not??? I am assuming that if they didn't do that there would be no reason to put PTT wiring at the rear of the bike..but in the sehamatic there is a Passenger set-up..wahoo!!!

Ok I looked closely at the schematic and there should be wring for a PTT white, orange and gray..orange and gray for the channel up/down..

So I guess I should be looking for a unused connector with white, orange and gray and All I need is the white for the PTT function and the green in the wire I have to be grounded..right???

Anyone with a Oem Passenger PTT button????

Post by RBGERSON »

I have a second post about this but I figured is someone had an OEM installed CB passenger set-up they could look and see where it was hooked up. I have looked under the seat and didn't see an unused connector with the right colored wires.

Anyone have this Passenger CB set-up???? can you post a pic or ID the location of the connector?

There is a rubber insulated housing under my seat that contains two unused female connectors. One of the connectors supplies always-on 12 volts intended to run the trunk interior light. I've never checked out what the second connector is for, but I suspect it may be for the passenger CB functionality.

Ok, I looked it up on the schematic, and I was right - that brown 6-pin connector inside the rubber boot is for the passenger controller. It has the following wires:

Green/Black: Ground
White - CB Push to talk
Orange - CB channel up
Grey - CB channel down
Red/Black - Radio search up
Yellow/Red - Radio search down

Connecting the appropriate wire to ground causes the function to occur (i.e. connecting white to green/black will cause the CB to transmit).

I don't know if I want my passenger having control over the radio, however. :) :) :)

Doing my "winter maintenance and upgrades," and one thing I wanted to do was install a volume control and a PTT button for the passenger. Glad I found this thread. Thanks for point me in the right direction.
