Starter wont activate

Post by par4ugolf »

This past Saturday I was going for a ride on my 1999 Goldwing. I got into a bit of a jam and needed to use the reverse. I tiedt to activate reverse, but I could not get it to work. The bike stalled and now I can't get the starter to work. It is like there is nothing there. Lights come on on the dash, but nothing to the starter. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I could try. The bike is in neutral just in case you are wondering about that. There is not even a clicking sound.

You've checked the fuses (especially #1), correct?

If you haven't already downloaded the Honda Goldwing GL1500 2000 Electronic Service Manual from the main manuals page here, then you should.

I'm guessing it's either the fuse or the reverse switch. Do the headlight and the radio shut off when you try to reverse (like they normally do)?

Well let's just call me dumb and dumber. I did check the fuses, but I had no idea on the other item you mentioned. I called the place where I bought it and the service guy walked me through some stuff. One of the last things he probably was going to ask me about actually was the most obvious and make sure you check this before you make a complete idiot out of yourself. "Is the kill switch in the neutral position?" I told you dumb and dumber.

Thankyou for you help anyway as it is good to see that this forum is a place to go to get help. I have downloaded the manual from this website but haven't checked it out yet. I guess I better huh?

Thanks again

Ahh, the damn kill switch. We have all been made a fool of by that infernal device from time to time. :)

Kill Switch is not in out habit to use so we tend to FUGETABOUTIT.
But I hear that's a 'good thing', something about overuse and wear?

Yep, I have too! One time my buddy and I had stopped for lunch and he had already pulled out after we ate. I got on mine and it wouldn't do anything when I tried to start it. I called him and he turned around and came back. When he got there, he reached over and turned my kill switch back on and said "try it now". Boy, that was embarrassing! I have been riding for about 46 years and never had that happen before. We both laughed about it but I believe he though it was funnier than I did! I never turn that switch off but somehow it got moved that day. So yeah, it happens to all of us at times.

Yeah, he probably turned it before he left just to do that to you.
I did that once myself, turned the switch as I rolled up to a stop and forgot about it. My 92 GL1500 Interstate will turn over with the kill switch off but will not start. Took me a minute to remember that I had turned it off.

Use it always to shut engine off, then turn key off, that way it was a reflex if needed and rarely forgotten.

Even on my Norton or Triumph back in the day, killed them with the momentary push button kill buttons.

I am the same.
That said, I do not like the GL1500 kill switch. Why a up and down to kill it?
Other bikes I have had are a simple rocker switch, and much more easy to see than on the 1500.

2-way kill switch I believe are for different users.
Some like to use the index finger (pulls it down) others a thumb (pushes it up).
Also, think about BIG MITTEN users... I'm one and switch it either way.

JUST my thought & sticking to it. 8-)
