Dash Lights Quit Working

Post by revtmuller1 »

Hi, I just purchased a 1999 GL1500 SE and my dash lights quit working. I would appreciate help in checking this out. Thanks. All other lights are working fine.

Has anyone had the instrument panel apart for any reason? One of the plugs on the back could be the problem.

Not to my knowledge. If I remember right they were working at first but quit on me later for no real reason. Thanks.

By dash lights, do you mean all instrument lights went out? Do the illumination lights for the panel still work? Or is it the lights that normally come on before you start, as in testing the light bulbs? Hard to figure out unless the plugs are not tight.

The side stand, oil, reverse and neutral lights all light up fine. The speedometer and tachometer seem to have the numbers backlit but the panel seems to be in the dark. Hope that helps.

Do the turn signal indicators work like they should? Kinda looking like a bad ground, but if the back lightins for the Tach and speedo are working, what other lights are you looking for? LCD powered?

Good question :-). I guess I am expecting the instrument panel to be generally lighted as well as backlit. Is that too much to expect :-). Thanks for the reply.

When it is dark, or in the garage, take a look at it then. I don't see as there is a real problem. Enjoy riding. :)

Thanks, I'll keep my eye on it and see if there a real problem or not. I just thought the whole instrument panel looked dark to me. Stay safe.

It could be that there are some bulbs burnt black (they get hot), or burnt out. If you have to replace them, consider LED replacements. There is a "How To" in here somewhere.

Yeah, Redial. I thought of that. I will definitely consider doing the LED conversion. I notice that the lights are indeed working. Checking in the panel in total darkness confirms that. I did consult my "Wing Guy" in Cleveland and he said that that was a common complaint for the 1998 and 1999 models with the white faces on the instrument panel. Thanks again everyone for your concern and comments. Ride safe.

If you convert to LED lighting,do not convert the low fuel lamp.It will not operate properly indicating low fuel. The circuit is designed for a incandescent light only.

Both the cruise lights (on and set) will also malfunction (stay on all the time) if they are converted directly to LED. They need load resistors added. This is detailed at the bottom of the How to replace your dash lights with LEDs article.

The idiot lights in the dash work when I turn the key on, but I noticed the other day that I have no illumination for the speedometer or the tach so at night, I can't see either one. Any ideas? The only thing I've done to the bike is change the timing belts and plugs. I have all 4 filters in my garage but haven't installed them yet.. I really can't see all dash bulbs going out at the same time and don't know how to check...

Thanks.

They're just little light bulbs, they burn out over time. See: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10998
