gL1500 cb and radio problems
I have a 1989 gl1500 and radio volume is like it's stuck on mute ,also when it does this you can not change the radio stations you toggle the station switch and nothing changes also the CB will not transmit ,I have sprayed cleaner in the switches, took the radio out and unplugged it and cleaned those plug ins ,I even ran another ground wire from the battery to the radio ,sometimes it will come on for a brief time then goes back to this ,any ideals ?????

Have you checked your fuses at all? In particular the 5 amp "backup" fuse?
Does the radio keep the preset stations when the bike is shut off?

The 5 amp back amp fuse is located in the relay box right next to the fuse box

Here is the diagram for your Fuse/Relay box. The backup fuse is #9.

Re: gL1500 cb and radio problems
From your description I would suspect an open land on the neck of the audio unit. You just say CB is not transmitting but does it show TX on screen or is it just that there is no modulation?? I would never run a ground to the battery as that is where most noise comes from. I always run grounds to the frame.

Re: gL1500 cb and radio problems
Since it shows TX but no modulation can you hear yourself talk on the intercom?? All of the controls run into the neck of the radio and so do the headset connections and I still suspect a ground land is open on the circuit board at that point.
Usually you can put upward pressure on the connectors at the neck and see if the volume returns.

Re: gL1500 cb and radio problems
Thanks for the reply,no I cannot hear my self throughout the headsets when I talk I suspected it was a ground issue,I have unplugged all the connections and cleaned them, when it first started doing this it would come back to normal at times then just go back to mute ,now it will not come back on at all, that's when I ran another ground direct to the radio but it did not help

Relatively sure the problem is the radio needs service. You might call Jeff at Sierra tomorrow and see if he has any other suggestions. 800 338 6938

Been a long time for me too. Opened my first CB shop in 60's and the result is 3 generations and still going.
