GL1500 SE No Start but CLICKING noise

Post by TomOhio »

I have a 1993 GL1500 SE put a new battery in, tried starting it up, have lights, horn, etc. but won't start, just hearing a clicking noise down by fusebox on left side.....any ideas what it might be, what I should check out? :?:

Not sure about your bike but in general - the obvious tests which I have failed numerous times - clutch in, kill switch on but that is not your problem. Was new battery fully charged or just have enough for lights etc? Does your headlight dim when you try to start?

You could check power at the starter while you are starting and work back from there.

Hope it is a simple fix for you!

The clicking is the starter solenoid. Check the volts at the battery while trying to start, should have 12.4 before starting and around 11.3 while starting. I think less than 11 it won't start. New battery have been know to be bad before.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

My thinking, too. Either a low battery, or a bad solenoid. Try rapping on the solenoid with a screwdriver handle while trying to crank it. If it then cranks & starts, the solenoid is the problem.

The clicking on the LEFT side is simply the headlight relay dropping out as designed when starter button pushed, only now can you hear it because there is a fault in the start system.

Neutral light work? Have you tried starting by pulling in the clutch?

Did it turn over before you changed the battery? Might possibly be a bad connection on the ground cable also. I always like to check the simple stuff first. Usually I get in a hurry when I'm about done working on things and want to see if it's better. LOL

"AHHhh, the ole Ford rap on the fender mounted solenoid while you hit the key routine."
I remember THAT with my Ford Fairlane and several Galaxies, '60 - '61 - '63 & '66.

Had similar problem with my 93 Aspencade. Look at the Bank Angle Switch. It's between the right bag and frame. I removed my switch and bypassed with jumper wire. Since doing this my cruise doesn't work. Haven't got back to it yet. but I assume they share a ground. Honda no longer offers this switch and any you find are old stock. I intend to replace with switch off a newer bike. This switch kills the engine in the event the bike falls or leans to far.

I’ve got the same issue. Go to start and ignition relay clicks. I swapped out relay and same issue. I was able to turn over with screwdriver. New battery. It’s a trike so I’m going to check bank sensor, kickstand sensor, and would like suggestions on other things to check. Thanks.

Honda went to a lot of effort to make these bikes start, there are two starter relays, A and B. One right next to the battery with a 30 amp fuse and the other a little further forward and lower down before the juice can get to the starter motor. A test light or multimeter would be useful to make sure that a clicking relay is actually passing voltage to the next component. If the headlight doesn't dim when the starter button is pushed then it's likely that the starter isn't seeing any current but a tester is the way to go.

Oh and check ALL of the fuses, the starter/reverse system uses 4 different fuses!
