Does anyone know if there are torque specs for the alternator fastener bolts on a 1989 GL1500? Thanks.

Yes. 22 ft-lb for alternator mounting bolts (qty 3).

I replied to the other duplicate post by looking in the service manual shown below.
Did I miss something in replying 42 ft-lbs instead of 22?

That's the torque for the coupler mounting nuts, not the alternator mounting bolts. The mounting bolts are 22 ft-lb:

Wow, I can't find that in either my Honda Service or Clymer manuals.
Are you looking at something different?
Could it be that I'm looking at the 96 service manual and Clymer for 93-00 instead of 89?
I guess either way, I'm going to pencil in the torque for these.

Look in the Charging System chapter of your service manual. It's on page 17-2.

Thanks, I see it now. Silly me, I went to the index and then to 17-10.

I can't find any of this in my clymer 88 - 92 service manual. Mine is an 88. I know I have seen it somewhere. Came in looking for the torque on alt bolts which I knew I had seen before as 22 ft lbs. Was going to ask for recommendations for torqueing because I have a broken bolt to get out from last yr that broke torqueing to 22. Rode this season on 2 bolts that I just tightened by hand. So does everyone agree on 22.

17 ftlbs rings a bell with me. When I needed to replace mine in a motel parking lot in 2005, I just used the tool kit box wrench. No issues for a few weeks when I put the repaired one in, using same wrench. Then no issue for years.

Can’t imagine that you would break that bolt at 22ft/lbs unless the bolt was compromised.

I hand tightened the 2 that are in there and have never come loose.

Might have been. The bolt that broke was an original bolt so might have been weak. I did break another one that wasn't quality bolt. Couldn't find good grade metric bolts. Ordered the proper bolts from honda and want to get them in. So going to try an angle adapter on my drill to drill it out to get easy out in there. Don't want to take the alt out again if I don't have to.

I did get the new bolts in I ordered from honda and torqued to 22 ft lbs. Did 7 then 14 then 22. But only 2 bolts. No matter how I tried I couldn't find a way of getting broken bolt out. Not enough room to get anything in there properly. Run all summer on 2 not high quality bolts snigged with just a ratchet.
