trashing the collector box, run straight pipes
my collector box is trashed, i know their around $100 if you can find one. My question is, can i run straight pipes from the headers to exhaust?

You could but it's going to be LOUD and performance will likely suffer

Might hurt your low end power, would run better on top. Probably cost as much to have pipes bent up than just get one on eBay. Would definitely give it a throaty sound.

Kerry,
I sent a link to a thread on another place with pics of how to put HD Mufflers on a GL1500 and there's even a video url in the thread.

Re: trashing the collector box, run straight pipes
I had a set of FLH mufflers on my '76 Wing.
Too loud for me. My wife complained about getting
a headache from the noise after an hour or so.
I found a stock Wing muffler setup to use. Much better.
For me, the quietness of a stock Wing is worth whatever
it costs to replace the system with another stock system.

This article is for a GL1200 so you will need to update if installing on a GL1500.
Regarding the OP question from years ago, the GL1500C (Valkyrie) does not use a collector box nor a cross over pipe. The three pipes on one bank combine into a collector on that side, back in to one muffler on that side and three tailpipes coming out of the muffler which could as easily have been one. Many Valkyrie exhausts have had the Honda muffler removed and replaced with a common "Cherry Bomb."

Saw your post there here is another solution to your problem -
HONDA GL1500 GL 1500 GOLDWING GOLD WING EXHAUST COLLECTOR STAINLESS STEEL
Buy on Ebay Uk - Ebay Item number is - 141451199710
If you do get rid of the collector box you may wish to consider rejecting the carbs too !! As changing the exhaust can affect the running of the bike see below -
This Jet Kit Fits Honda GL1500 GOLD WING 88-89. Stage 5 / You get Whats In Photo.
Select the appropriate stage needed. Modifications to the air intake and/or Exhaust system to your motorcycle will change the air/fuel mixture to your carburetors causing a lean running condition.

Stage 4 is for motorcycles with lightly modified engines with individual air intakes and baffled aftermarket exhaust system.

Re: trashing the collector box, run straight pipes
I blew out one of the pipes on my 1500 and a pair were going to cost me around $900 US. So I installed a set of HD pipes but kept the collector box without any noticeable change in performance. Bike is a bit louder but not extreme and definitely does not sound anything like a Harley.

Re: trashing the collector box, run straight pipes
I removed the collector box when i triked my 1500 built my own system with out a collector or link pipe. the performance or fuel is fine. acceleration is good and i get about 37mpg it a bit loud if i give it some throttle when pulling away other than that no problems
